X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing is the fastest, non-destructive way to detect lead in paint. Here's how it works and when it's the right choice for your property.
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers measure the lead content in painted surfaces in seconds, without damaging the wall or component. The device emits low-energy X-rays that cause elements in the paint to fluoresce; the analyzer reads the fluorescence to determine lead concentration.
XRF is ideal for risk assessments and clearance inspections because it's fast, non-destructive, and covers many surfaces quickly — door frames, window frames, stairway railings, and walls. For regulatory documentation, results are paired with dust wipe sampling and lab analysis.
We use XRF as part of a full lead risk assessment, which produces a written report identifying lead hazards and recommending abatement or interim controls.
